DURBAN - An extensive search is under way for the apprehension of two male suspects after the gruesome stabbing of a woman in Ottawa, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) officers were dispatched to the scene of a stabbing after receiving multiple calls from distressed residents reporting a hijacking/robbery in progress in Sunker Road at about 2pm.

Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said the operations centre next received another call reporting that a woman was bleeding excessively from multiple stab wounds to her body.

He said paramedics were then sent to the same location.

According Balram, upon arrival, a foreign national woman estimated to be 33 years old was found with eight stab wounds to her upper body.

He said paramedics stabilised her on scene and rapidly transported her to hospital in a critical condition.

In an on-scene interview, a 21-year-old man told the first responders that he and his sister-in-law were from Mumbai, India, and have been operating a chicken tikka and salon business in Dawncrest in Verulam since their arrival in the country in 2018.

“Earlier today, the man accompanied his sister-in-law to a premises to fetch stock. When they arrived at the premises they noticed two males waiting near the building and picking cardboards and cans. One of the men approached the victim and asked for food or money.

“After informing them that all he could offer them was a cigarette, both suspects accepted and the passenger then alighted from the vehicle and walked towards the premises to fetch the stock he had ordered for his business,” said Balram.

Balram said the man later heard his sister-in-law screaming hysterically.

“He then ran towards the vehicle and found one of the cardboard collectors with a firearm and the second repeatedly stabbing the woman,” said Balram.

Rusa said the suspects then threw the victim out of her grey 2013 Honda Civic and fled with the vehicle. They also took money and two mobile phones.
