DURBAN - THE Msunduzi municipality has announced the launch of an online business licensing portal that aims to make it easier for businesses to apply for licences and permits.

The business portal will be launched on July 1 and will assist over 4 000 businesses with licences that are required to be renewed annually.

Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumabatha said: “The aim of the portal is to provide businesses with a flexible platform and a seamless uniform process to apply for business licensing and informal trading permits online, anywhere and at any time, without visiting municipal offices.”

She said the applicants will register online and provide their personal details, business details, upload the necessary documents and submit it to the licensing department, which will then validate and process the applications and provide feedback via the portal.

“This process will increase efficiency and reduce the travel burden for businesses who have been visiting municipal offices for applications and renewals,” she said.

Business licensing manager Mandla Sithole said the demand for business licensing was continuously increasing as they attend to an average of 15 to 20 enquiries a day.

“The online portal will allow for flexibility, as business owners can apply for and renew their licences and permits from the comfort of their homes. Furthermore, the handling of a large number of hard copy applications and having an influx of people coming in and out of the office could pose health risks during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He said the new online portal was a smarter way of functioning in line with the fourth industrial revolution and it would be an easily accessible and user-friendly way of improving services provided to the community of Msunduzi.
