DURBAN - The family of the eThekwini Municipality official, who was gunned down in his office on Monday, say his death is a great loss to his family, community and colleagues.

Nkosinathi Amos Ngcobo was killed at the city’s DSW office in Springfield.

On Monday, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the Sydenham SAPS were investigating a case of murder.

“We can confirm that a shooting took place at 2.15pm on Electron Road, where a male was shot by two unknown suspects. The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage,” she said.

Today, eThekwini deputy mayor Philani Mavundla visited Ngcobo’s home in uMhlanga.

Mavundla arrived at the home with a large group of staff members to pay his respects.

Family spokesperson Nkosi Mahlangu described Ngcobo as a man of character who would not tolerate wrongdoing.

“He was a straight man who did not sit on the fence and would call out people for doing a wrong things.

“For example, one of his children is unemployed yet he was a senior manager and could have easily found employment for the child but he kept saying his child should apply and would eventually get a job. He never did anything underhanded,” he said.

Staff members, who spoke to The Mercury on condition of anonymity this week, raised concerns about their safety at work.

One staff member said: “There have been many instances, even in the same Springfield precinct, where business forums have made it into buildings and accosted managers without being stopped by security.”
