Durban - Two suspects are expected to appear before the Bergville Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the murder of a 39-year-old businessman.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the businessman was shot dead on Tuesday night at his business premises in the Bergville CBD.

She added that a police officer heard the gunshots and responded to the scene.

“Three gunshots rang out, the sounds were picked up by an off-duty police officer who was seated in his vehicle close to the scene of the shooting. The officer noticed two men running. He immediately gave chase with his vehicle, until the men jumped over a fence,” said Gwala.

The officer then pursued the suspects on foot before being joined by another three off-duty police officers who were in close proximity.

She said the suspects were apprehended and police recovered a 9mm pistol which contained five rounds of ammunition.

Meanwhile, the Durban Central police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is seeking assistance in locating a 45-year-old suspect, Eddie Malobo, in connection with a rape case.

According to Gwala, it is alleged that between 2017 and 2021, a 22-year-old victim was repeatedly raped by a known suspect on Bell Street at South Beach.

In 2021 the victim reported the matter to the Point police. The docket was transferred to the Durban Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation.

Gwala added that the suspect fled after getting wind of the search for him.

“The suspect heard that police were searching for him and he left the area. He is originally from Limpopo and his whereabouts are unknown at this stage. A warrant of arrest has been issued by the Durban Magistrate’s Court,” she said.

The police are calling on anyone who might have information regarding the suspect to contact investigating officer Detective Constable Dlani on 079 812 0486 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
