One person has died and others have been injured after a boat capsized near eMkhomazi (Umkomaas) on Wednesday morning.

Vema paramedics said in a statement on Facebook that one of their medics received a call about the incident just after 7.30am.

“One of our medics (in the area was) 3km away. (The paramedic) responded to the calls for assistance. Upon our arrival we found that CPR had been initiated by bystanders and local divers to the patient.”

The emergency medical service said the person had been declared dead after life support procedures had been carried out for about an hour.

“(Police) were on scene and would be investigating the incident further.”

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said in a statement that the man was believed to be in his 50s.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene at 8am to find Vema paramedics already on the scene performing CPR on the man, who was found on the beach.

Meiring said both sets of paramedics continued CPR for some time, as well as providing the man with advanced life support interventions.

"Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned. Nothing more could be done and he was pronounced dead on the scene."

South Coast Herald reported at the time that motorists had been advised to exercise caution while travelling along the R102 towards Umkomaas near Waves Restaurant as medical personnel and the fire department were at the scene.
