DURBAN - FIREFIGHTERS responded to a fire at a Cambridge store in the Durban CBD this morning.
Firefighters and police were at the scene at Warwick Junction.
Ethekwini Municipality said that firefighters had attended to the fire.
“The city is aware of the fire which started from one of the shops at the English Market located in Warwick Junction this morning. The situation is under control. All city’s emergency services are on the scene and the cause of the fire is unknown at this stage,” said the city.
They added that there are no fatalities or injuries reported, and that an investigation into the cause of the blaze will be conducted.
Eyewitness Okuhle Mpahlana, who lives in the vicinity, said she saw the smoke from her room.
“I was in my room when I saw a lot of thick black smoke coming from the building, and so my friends and I came down here,” said Mpahlana.
She described the scene as being chaotic.
“People were running up and down like crazy, with the staff from the supermarket running outside for safety, and the street vendors that sell next to the store running to save their stock. It was a mess,” she added.
Provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that the officers had responded to the scene and that no fatalities had been reported.
