Police officer shot on his way to work

A police captain has been killed in a shooting on Tuesday morning.

The officer, 43, said police in a statement, had been stationed at the Umbumbulu Detective Branch, and was on his way to work, travelling on the R603 between Folweni and Umbumbulu when the incident took place.

"It is alleged that a vehicle with four occupants had been following the deceased. The suspects opened fire on the police officer, wounding him fatally.

The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle without taking anything from the deceased officer."

They said a case of murder had been opened at the Umbumbulu police station.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa  said he was deeply saddened by the killing of another police officer in KwaZulu-Natal.

“We condemn this senseless killing of our police officer and our detectives will work around the clock in tracing the perpetrators. We also wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues during this very trying time,” he said.

In a separate incident, on November 15 at 11.45am, Constable Jabulani Mavundla stationed at Mbongolwane police station near Eshowe was on duty with his colleague when they attended to a complaint of robbery at Maqhogo area.

On their way back to the station, they had been ambushed by the criminals who opened fire at them. Constable Mavundla was shot and the vehicle went out of control, hitting the trees nearby. He died at the scene.
