DURBAN - FOUR men suspected of being involved in house break-ins were arrested following a high-speed chase in Glenwood on Wednesday night.

Police said the men were “hanging out” in a parked vehicle outside a fast food outlet in Rick Turner Road in Glenwood, when they were spotted by police patrolling the area.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said when the police officers approached the suspects in the vehicle, they sped off.

A chase ensued towards the Cato Manor sports ground and the suspects were intercepted by police.

“One of the occupants alighted from the vehicle and pointed a firearm at the police officers. The suspect was shot on the thigh during the confrontation.”

She said all four suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were placed under arrest by members of the Umbilo Task Team.

Mbele said the injured suspect was found in unlawful possession of a revolver with five rounds of ammunition, adding that the suspects were also found in possession of a replica firearm and housebreaking implements.

“The injured suspect was taken to hospital where he is under police guard. The arrested suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other robberies and serious cases committed in Umbilo and surrounding areas,” she said.

A case was opened at Umbilo SAPS and the suspects were charged with pointing of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession of housebreaking implements.

The suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.
