Durban - A man – charged with the rape of his nephew – was sentenced to life in prison this week.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said in a statement that, on Monday, theVryheid Regional Court convicted and sentenced the 27-year-old man for the crime he had committed on December 31, 2015 at Dumbe, Paulpietersburg.

His identity is being withheld to protect the identity of his victim and relative.

“It is alleged a 13-year-old boy and his uncle were at their homestead when the victim fell asleep. 

The victim was awoken by his uncle who raped him.”

The uncle also threatened to kill the boy should he tell anyone.

The next day, the victim reported the matter to his mother and a case of rape was opened at Paulpietersburg police station. 

“The docket was transferred to Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. 

The culprit was then arrested and made several court appearances.”

“The victims should never be terrified to report cases to the police. We urge the family members to continue to report such cases.”
