RASA encourages the restaurant industry to be ‘strong’ under level 4 lockdown

The Restaurant Association of South Africa(RASA) has encouraged the industry to remain strong and to keep fighting during the two weeks of level 4 lockdown.

DA MP Dean Macpherson tweeted this picture on Monday as SA began adjusted level 4 lockdown. He said the picture, taken at 8.20pm just after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Sunday, was heartbreaking because the restaurant manager knew he would not have an income for the duration of level 4.

DURBAN - THE Restaurant Association of SA (Rasa) has encouraged the industry to remain strong and to keep fighting in these two weeks of level 4 lockdown.

South Africa moved into an adjusted level 4 lockdown on Monday following an announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday that Covid-19 cases were rapidly rising.

Under the regulations South Africans are required to remain indoors between 9pm and 4am and the sale of alcohol is not permitted. Restaurants can only sell takeaways.

On Monday night, Rasa’s Ronaldo John said the association was aware that the industry is currently going through tough time.

“I cannot believe what the government has done to us once again, but regardless of what is happening we need you to be strong. I need you to keep fighting for your businesses and to do everything we can to keep our businesses and industry alive,” he said.

John said Rasa chief executive Wendy Alberts was doing everything she could to work with and consult with the government.

The association had written a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa and would do everything it could to try to get the industry opened as quickly as possible, he said.

“I strongly believe that they will hear our pleas, we are South Africa's most loved industry. As hard and stressful as it is, you need to remain strong and positive so we can have our lights back on soon welcoming patrons,” said John.
