In July The Mercury reported that 170 residents were left homeless when a fire tore through an informal settlement on Kennedy Road.

Five young girls lost their lives in two fires on one day in the city early in June.

The girls – all aged 6 and younger – had allegedly been left unattended by their parents when their homes went up in flames.

One of the fires was in Wyebank, while the second was in Westham, Phoenix.
