Suspect arrested for allegedly using counterfeit money to fill up at Pietermaritzburg petrol station

Durban - A man was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning for allegedly using counterfeit money.

Magma Security said the suspect had allegedly used the money to pay for fuel at a petrol station in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday last week.

Shaheen Suleiman, the owner of Magma Security, said that on the Tuesday, at a garage in Victoria Road, a male suspect driving a white Toyota vehicle paid R550 for petrol.

He said the man allegedly used R100 counterfeit notes to make the payment and drove off.

Suleiman added that the Magma investigation team began looking for the vehicle.

“On Sunday, a Magma Security reaction officer noticed the above vehicle parked at a garage at Armitage Road.”

Suleiman said that the security officer immediately blocked off the vehicle and called for back-up.

“Magma Armed Response and Special Ops units responded. The suspect was questioned and allegedly admitted to the offence.”

Suleiman added that the suspect and the vehicle were handed over to SAPS Loop Street and he was detained.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that a case of theft is being investigated by Pietermaritzburg SAPS.

"It is alleged that on 19 July 2022 at 07:15, a vehicle driven by an unknown man arrived at a service station on Victoria Road in Pietermaritzburg to fill up petrol. The petrol attendant noticed that the money that was used to pay was fake money."

In May, police arrested two alleged drug dealers on the South Coast and seized several drugs and R600 000 in counterfeit R100 notes.
