Three people have been left injured after a taxi rear-ended another on the N3 northbound highway near the Ashburton turnoff in Pietermaritzburg on Monday morning.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said that paramedics had arrived on the scene at 8.11am to find both taxis in the centre median of the highway.

"The passengers and drivers from both taxis were found walking around on the scene."

He said that paramedics had assessed the patients and found that two women, one of them pregnant, and one man had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

"Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were found on this incident."

Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and thereafter transported them to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg and Northdale Provincial Hospital for further treatment.

"The drivers of the taxis were assessed and found to have escaped injury.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations."
