Durban - Five people were injured in a collision involving two trucks and a vehicle on the N2 south bound opposite Sunningdale in Durban North on Wednesday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said that just before 2pm paramedics were dispatched after receiving reports that two trucks and a car were involved in a collision.

Herbst said according to reports, the collision resulted in the smaller truck leaving the roadway, coming to rest on its roof.

He said eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services, the Road Traffic Inspectorate, Durban North SAPS, Durban Metropolitan Police and Marshall Security were also at the scene.

“Medics assessed the scene and found that three occupants had sustained critical injuries and another two patients had sustained moderate injuries,” said Herbst.

Herbst said all five patients were treated by Netcare 911 emergency care practitioners and once stabilised they were transported to a specialist medical facility for the further care they required.

The Mercury reported on Tuesday that as part of its activities for this year’s October Transport, the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department will focus on trucks after the fatal N2 truck accident near Pongola that claimed 20 lives including children recently.

In the report the department said the activities will also include random assessments of vehicles, checks on drivers’ documentation, fitness of drivers and their conduct on the road.

The truck driver involved in the horrific Pongola crash, Sibusiso Siyaya, 28, who faces 20 counts of culpable homicide, made a second appearance in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday and abandoned his bail application.
