Durban - A 27-year-old University of Zululand (UniZulu) student died after he was assaulted by an angry 'vigilante mob' at the tertiary institutions premises on Friday.

In a statement, the university condemned the murder of Andile Boyise Mchunu.

“It is with great sadness to inform you of the untimely death of one of our students Mr Andile Boyise Mchunu who was tragically killed early this morning[May 3] by a vigilante mob on the outskirts of the university premises near Dlomo Cottages,” said the university.

The university said its management strongly condemns vigilante mob violence and the senseless killing of Mchunu.

“The loss of a child no matter what the circumstances is always a bitter pain to endure and understand. Our commiserations and condolences to the deceased’s family for their loss,” said UniZulu.

UniZulu said the university would cooperate fully with the police during the course of the investigation.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said it is alleged that the 27-year-old man was assaulted to death by community members.

Gwala said a case of murder was opened at Mtunzini SAPS.

The circumstances surrounding the student’s murder are still to be determined.

"The matter is still under investigation," said Gwala.
