UPDATE: Employee and security guard killed in Springfield business robbery

Police confirmed that a 46-year-old security guard and a 48-year-old employee were fatally wounded during a business robbery on Londonderry Crescent in Springfield Durban today.

DURBAN - A group of armed men killed an employee and a security guard at a business on Londonderry Crescent in Springfield, Durban today.

KwaZulu-Natal regional police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said it was alleged that at 11.24am a group of armed men arrived at the business premises on Londonderry Crescent and shot a 46-year-old security guard and another 48-year-old employee.

“Both victims sustained injuries on the body and they died at the scene,”she said

Gwala said the suspects also robbed the security guard of his firearm before fleeing the scene on foot.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said paramedics responded to the scene to find two men aged between 40 and 50 years old who had sustained gunshot wounds.

“One man was found to have sustained fatal wounds and there was nothing paramedics could do to assist him; he was declared dead on arrival.

“The second, was found in a critical condition and advanced life support paramedics worked fervently to save the man, however he sadly succumbed to his injuries and died on the scene,”he said.

According to Van Reenen, reports from the scene allege the men were working at the business when they were confronted by armed suspects during a business robbery.

“A shoot-out ensued resulting in the tragedy,” he said.

Police said charges of murder and armed robbery were opened for investigation at Mayville SAPS.

The matter is under investigation.
