DURBAN – The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has asked teachers in some of its districts not to report to their vaccination sites on Monday due to the vaccine running out.

It said teachers from UMkhanyakude, UMlazi and the Pinetown district should report to school instead of their respective vaccination sites.

The department started its vaccination campaign last week in the hopes of vaccinating more than a 100 000 teachers across the province in the coming two weeks.

Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said all the doses they received have run out.

“These staff members in the affected region are not to report to the vaccine sites on Monday and Tuesday. The vaccines have run out, but we have received a few doses from the Department of Health that are being processed,” added Mahlambi.

Mahlambi said that they should have a clear direction on how to carry on with vaccination by Wednesday. “We ask for people to not panic, everyone who is registered to be vaccinated will get vaccinated.”

In a statement, teachers’ union Natu on Saturday said vaccination of the education sector was rolling out very well countrywide. “It shows commitment and determination by all parties. Employers in the sector have prepared themselves to go and vaccinate as they put their country first by doing so.”

It said, however, it had noted with concern an incident at one school in Amajuba where teachers had to leave a school and rush to a vaccination site.
