Durban - A video of a motorist travelling in a Gauteng registered van attempting to overtake a bus on a busy two lane road has gone viral and sparked debate with many saying, “Only in South Africa”.

The video was shared by crime activist Yusuf Abramjee on Twitter on Tuesday.

Another motorist travelling behind the bakkie captured the shocking scene on video.

The footage shows a Toyota van with a GP licence plate travelling on a two lane road in-between other vehicles with no back passenger tyre just a rim.

The man filming, pans the camera down to his speedometer which indicates that both he and the reckless motorist in front of him were travelling at 80 km per hour.

The impatient motorist in the van attempts to overtake the bus but quickly returns to his lane as oncoming vehicles pass.

The motorist behind the van is heard saying that the speed had increased to 90 km and then 100 km.

The man filming the van said he could not believe that the rim was holding, and that the driver was able to travel at high speeds in this manner despite potholes and other factors that could be dangerous.

The video received over 23 000 views as at 2pm on Tuesday and over 250 retweets. Many people who commented on the video were not surprised.
