The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Basic Education has suspended an uMlazi deputy principal accused of caning pupils.

Head of Department Dr Enoch Nzama led a high level delegation to Okumhlophe Secondary School, in the township of uMlazi, in south Durban, on Monday morning.

This after video footage, allegedly of a teacher caning two pupils at the school, emerged at the weekend.

A male pupil is also seen being hit in a similar way.

Nzama said the suspended deputy principal would be subject to a disciplinary hearing soon.

He also said that it seemed as though these canings might not have been isolated events and that the department would investigate further.

Meanwhile, the department is still trying to identify a school, believed to be in Kokstad, where another video of a caning was believed to have been shot recently.
