Weekend accident wrap: three dead, over 58 injured in KZN road carnage

DURBAN – Three people were killed and at least 58 others sustained injuries in accidents across the province this past weekend.

One person died and about 50 people were injured when the bus they were travelling in left the roadway and rolled down an embankment on the R66 between Gingindlovu and Eshowe yesterday, said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst.

He said advance-life support paramedics, along with various other services, worked to stabilise and rescue the victims.

“IPSS Search and Rescue technicians have accessed the bus and initial triage indicates approximately 50 persons have sustained injuries. Sadly, one person has sustained fatal injuries,” he said.

On Saturday, Herbst said a taxi rolled on the N2 near Groutville and passengers sustained injuries. Some of the passengers required advanced medical life support.

On Saturday afternoon, three people were left with injuries ranging from minor to moderate after three light motor vehicles and a heavy-duty vehicle collided at the Stanger Street and Argyle Road intersection in Durban.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) also reported that two people were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a house on an unnamed road in B Section, Parkgate, in Verulam, on Saturday.

Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said residents in the area contacted Rusa at approximately 13.38pm requesting assistance at the scene.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said on Friday morning that Netcare 911 attended a collision on the N3 below the New England Road Bridge in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg; two vehicles were involved in the collision.

“The patients were treated on scene by advanced-life support paramedics while the fire and rescue services used hydraulic tools to free the injured,” he said.

Mi7 security intelligence group, who were also in attendance said another patient, from the second vehicle, was immediately stabilised using advanced-life support interventions by Mi7 medics and transported to hospital for further treatment.

“Once the elderly patient was extricated from the wreck by firefighters, Mi7 medics administered advanced life support interventions, including placing the patient on a ventilator, before transporting her to hospital in a critical condition for further treatment,” it said.

On Friday afternoon around 2pm, multiple emergency services attended the scene of serious motor vehicle collision on the N2 southbound carriageway near the NPC Cement Factory.

ALS Paramedics and KZN VIP Medical Paramedics said there was total carnage when they arrived at the scene.

A bakkie had lost control on the northbound carriageway before crossing over the centre median and colliding into three trucks and another bakkie on the southbound carriageway.

“Two people sustained fatal injuries and were assessed by paramedics, however, they showed no signs of life and both were declared deceased on the scene.

“Three others sustained serious injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby Durban Hospital for the further treatment that they required,” said Jamieson.

On Friday evening, Netcare911 responded to a collision where the driver of bakkie had lost control resulting in a roll on the M13 Fields Hill in Durban’s West Region.

“The patient, an adult male was treated on scene by medics while a Netcare 911 rescue technician used hydraulic tools to cut the patient free from the vehicle. Once stabilised the patient was transported by private ambulance to hospital for further treatment,” said Netcare911.
