DURBAN – A well-known truck owner and businessman, Vinesh Lewis, 56, from Akeel Transport was shot outside his business premises yesterday.

Police said Lewis succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The businessman’s family said today that they were in shock and had no idea why he had been killed.

His son, Jason (Romeo) Lewis, said that the family were devastated.

“We just can’t believe this happened. We just have no idea who would do something like this. This was a hit, there was no jewellery taken, no valuables, not even a cellphone. It’s unbearable for us. We as a family want the culprits found, we want justice,” he said.

Mark Gounder, community activist in Isipingo, described Lewis as someone who gave back to the community.

“He was always so willing to assist. During the violence and looting in the July unrest he used his truck to deliver bread and milk, at no cost. He offered his assistance wherever he could.”

Gounder added that he did not know why anyone would want to harm Lewis.

“He was always involved in community work. He was also an avid biker. I know that he was looking forward to retiring, spending more time with his family and travelling the world.”

PT Alarms also paid tribute to Lewis.

“PT Alarms Fire & Security is shocked and deeply saddened by the fatal shooting of Orient Hills resident and businessman/truck owner Vinesh, from Akeel’s Transport. We at PT Alarms extend our sincere condolences to the family of the dearly departed Vinesh. May his soul rest in peace”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said a case of murder was opened in Isipingo for investigation.

“It is alleged that on March 29 at 2.30pm, a 56-year old male was in his vehicle on M35 main road in Isipingo Hills when he was shot by an unknown suspect. He sustained a gunshot wound to his mouth. The victim managed to drive himself to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The motive for the killing is unknown.”
