EDITOR'S VIEW - The father of our nation, Nelson Mandela, said: “Our children are our future, and one of the basic responsibilities is to care for them in the best and most compassionate manner possible.”

He said: “Our children are our greatest treasure. They are our future. Those who abuse them tear at the fabric of our society and weaken our nation.”

Our beloved Madiba’s appeal to protect our children has yet again been defied with Monday’s gruesome discovery of the remains of 9-year-old Miguel Louw, in bushes in Phoenix, north of Durban.

Miguel went missing two months ago. A suspect is in custody awaiting trial. The body was found metres from the man’s house.

The drive by the Sydenham and greater Durban community to find Miguel was most heart-warming.

It is worrying that monsters masquerading as humans are still sharing living spaces with families. Our future is being destroyed with the death of every child. We need to do more to ensure our precious children are safe.

Parents must take greater responsibility for the care of their children and know at all times where they are and with whom. A child’s right to life is sacred. The savages who deny this right must be removed from society.
