Maritzburg United have set their sights on Mamelodi Sundowns forward Yannick Zakri after selling their key player, Lebohang Maboe.

Maboe signed a five-year deal with Sundowns on Friday. He made his debut against Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend.

The Team of Choice are set to welcome the exciting prospect Keletso Makgwala on loan from Sundowns as the part of Maboe deal.

The former Under-20 star is likely to be joined by Zakri as part of the Maboe deal.

Maboe was one of the key players for the Team of Choice last season, and he walked away with the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament and the Most Promising Player of the Tournament awards.

His performances caught the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, who included him in his Cosafa Cup squad.

Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia confirmed they were in talks with Sundowns regarding Zakri.

“It was a reasonable business deal. We don’t have sponsors and the financial support that we normally receive from Msunduzi Municipality. We had to balance the books. We had foreign clubs inquiring about Maboe, and I told Pitso Mosimane (Sundowns coach) that if we decide to sell locally, we would give them the first option.

“Sundowns gave us Keletso Makgala. He is going to be on loan until the end of the season. Another player we’ve targeted is Zakri,” Kadodia added.

Zakri was on loan at Ajax Cape Town last season, where he shone.

“The problem with Zakri is that he has yet to return to South Africa. Once he returns, we will hold talks with him. He is an ideal replacement for Maboe. We want to buy him outright.”
