London - A stewardess on the yacht on which Princess Diana cruised with Dodi Al Fayed before her death told an inquest on Wednesday she spotted half-empty contraceptive pill packets among the princess's belongings.

Several of Diana's friends have told the inquest in London there was no way the princess could have been pregnant at the time of her death as claimed by Dodi's father, Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed.

Deborah Gribble, a senior stewardess on the Fayed family's luxury yacht, Jonikal, said she spotted the birth control pills during her cleaning duties on two of the three Mediterranean cruises Diana took with Dodi.

Gribble, speaking via video-link from New Zealand, said: "Yes, I believe there were pills in the pack."

She agreed it was "apparent" that Diana and Dodi were sleeping together, adding: "They were clearly having a relationship and were a couple."

Al Fayed believes Diana was pregnant and the couple were killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, as they were about to announce their engagement.

Dodi may also have been planning a future for them together, the inquest heard.
