Rio de Janeiro - A fire on the set of a popular children's television show left 26 audience members injured, three of them seriously, the Globo television network said on Friday.

The fire began Thursday night when a mechanical space ship that was part of the scenery on the Xuxa Park television show short-circuited, the network said in a statement.

At the time, about 300 people, two-thirds of them children, were in the studio audience to watch the popular kiddie show hostess Xuxa tape this Sunday's show.

The majority of the victims suffered from smoke inhalation, but three people - two children, ages seven and 10, and one adult - suffered second-and third-degree burns and were sent for treatment at a specialised hospital, the network said.

None of the injuries was considered life threatening, hospital officials said.

Police said they were still investigating the cause of the fire but discounted the possibility that it had been set intentionally. - Sapa-AP
