Nairobi - US prosecutors have indicted five more people suspected of involvement in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

A statement from the US embassy in the Kenyan capital Nairobi said US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Mary Jo White and Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Office Barry Mawn issued the indictments on Wednesday in New York.

The five defendants, plus eight others including Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden charged in previous indictments, remain fugitives, the statement said.

The trial of four defendants already in US custody is scheduled to start on January 3, while three other defendants are in extradition proceedings in Britain.

"Today's indictment demonstrates our continuing resolve to identify, locate, apprehend, and prosecute all those responsible for the murderous bombings of our embassies in East Africa," Mawn said in announcing the charges.

"We will pursue this goal for however long it takes and wherever in the world the evidence leads us."

The twin blasts on August 7, 1998 killed more than 220 people and injured thousands.

The statement named the defendants as Saif Al Adel, Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, Muhsin Musa Matwalli Atwah, Ahmed Mohamed Hamed Ali and Anas Al Liby. It did not specify their nationalities.

Each of the accused faces life imprisonment with no parole while Ahmed Abdullah could face the death penalty, the statement said. - Reuters
