Second hand cars have become more popular than ever in the current economic climate, with around 2.5 used cars sold for every brand new one that leaves the showroom floor.

With that in mind, Gumtree Autos, which has more than 200 000 Autos ads live at any given time, has done some homework and compiled a list of cars that give you the maximum value for your rands.

Ford Fiesta

The Fiesta is a tough little car that’s also spacious, fun to drive and affordable. The average second hand Fiesta can be bought for less than R140 000. It’s a must for everyday driving.

Honda Jazz

The Honda Jazz has a great reputation for reliability and drivability, but it holds onto its value for a long time. The average Honda Jazz selling price on Gumtree is around R110 000 but expect to pay at least R175 000 to R200 000 for newer models.

Renault Clio

The average Clio can be bought for less than R130 000 according to the Gumtree Price Checker. It’s stylish, roomy and built to last. It’s not as cheap as comparable models when it comes to buying replacement parts, but there are very few reliability concerns.

Hyundai i10

The Hyundai i10 is a great little car for city driving. Comparatively spacious and affordable, it’s a winner on the second hand market. Expect to pay between R115 000 and R140 000 for a newer model.

Kia Picanto

The Kia is popular on the second hand market because it’s cheap to buy and light on petrol. You can easily pick one up for under R110 000 and they last for years.

Audi A1

If you are looking for a premium car to buy, the A1 is for you. It’s not a bargain at about R300 000 for a second hand model, but it is stylish and comes with all the implicit quality guarantees associated with the Audi brand.

Nissan Qashqai

There are a lot of them on the road – and with good reason. Nissans are known for having engines that last for ages, in addition to being spacious and easy to drive. Pick yours up for R240 000 or less.
