A Special Edition of BMW's biggest beetle-crusher, the R1150 GS Adventure, is now available in Europe with extra equipment that would take the cost of the bike to about R120 000.

The Adventure SE, however, will retail for £9 500 - about R114 000 (at 26/05/05).

The Adventure SE has anti-lock brakes, engine protection bars, heatable grips and and white indicator lenses and only 90 have been allocated to the UK.

They'll be available in a special white and blue colour scheme with a grey and blue seat.

Dual-purpose tyres are standard but off-road tyres will be fitted at no extra cost.

The GS Adventure has been the first choice of overland adventurers since it was introduced in 2002. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman each rode one when they rode from London to New York "the long way round".

GlobeBusters duo Kevin and Julia Sanders, holders of the World record for the fastest circumnavigation - on a standard R1150 GS - completed the fastest Transamerica ride from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego on a GS Adventure.

And the White Nights Ride team (a group of 10 riders with backgrounds ranging from royalty to blue-chip businessmen) is currently riding 10 500km from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg in an attempt to raise $1-million for charity.

The team decided that only one bike was tough enough for the trip across Russia (much of which will be on dirt tracks or gravel roads) - the R1150 GS Adventure.

"This year is the 25th anniversary of the GS range," said BMW UK marketing manager Tony Jakeman, "so anyone choosing this version of the Adventure will be buying-in to part of BMW's heritage."

- Sorry, but there are no plans at present to bring the Special Edition R1150 GS Adventure to South Africa.
