Cape Town – August may be Women’s month, but the gentlemen racers of the Western Province Motorcycle Section stretched that out for another couple of weeks.

To encourage the fairer sex to get serious about riding, they offered free entry to all ladies at the Mike Hopkins Motorcycles track school at the Killarney circuit on 13 September – and convenor David Bolding was delighted when about 20 took him up on it, arriving on motorcycles ranging from lightweight commuters to big cruisers and superbikes.

And once they’d got over their initial nervousness about being on a race-track (“Just go down to the fork, turn left and follow the road”) they showed some of the men a thing or two, with a smooth and fluid riding style, working with the bike rather than against it, since women lack the upper body strength to throw a big motorcycle around.

And to show you exactly what we mean, we bring you this gallery of ladies tall and small, showing us the true meaning of grace under pressure – and remember, these guests didn’t have the track to the themselves; they had to jump in with the guys.
