Citroën has added an entry-level, front-wheel drive turbodiesel to its C4 Aircross range, promising fuel consumption as low as 4.6 litres per 100km and emissions of 119 grams per kilometre - making it kind to both your pocket and your planet.

The new C4 Aircross 1.6 HDi Seduction slips into the line-up at R339 900 with most of its more expensive siblings' practical features still intact - specifically including their middelmannetjie-defying 200mm ground clearance, 750kg unbraked and 1200kg braked towing capacity.

You also get automatic headlights and wipers, satellite controls on the steering wheel, a chilled glove compartment (courtesy of the auto air-conditioning) a 12V power point, USB and auxiliary audio jack access to the sound system, voice-activated Bluetooth connectivity and enough cup-holders for the Real Madrid trophy room.

FULL-SIZED SPARE

Readers of European motoring pages will have noted that the 384-litre luggage capacity of the SA-market C4 Aircross is a little less than in EU markets - that's because, in deference to potholed South African roads, we also get a full-sized spare wheel.

The split rear-seat backrest has two rake positions, and can fold flat to increase cargo-bay volume, while a glazed panoramic sunroof with UV protection and a one-touch electric blind is an option.

The C4 Seduction's direct injection 1.6-litre turbodiesel parks alongside the existing range of two-litre petrol models with output ratings of 84kW at 3600rpm and 270Nm at 1750 rpm, a six-speed transmission and an idle-stop function.

Seven airbags are standard, as are ABS, IsoFix child-seat mounts, a three-year/100 000km warranty (extendable to five years or 100 000km) and a five-year or 100 000km service plan, upgradable to a full-maintenance plan covering the same period.
