Ingolstadt - With the E-Tron SUV about to hit the streets, Audi's electrification focus is shifting to a new Tesla-rivalling sedan called the E-Tron GT.

Audi announced these plans in a brief teaser campaign earlier in the year, but now more details are emerging, with

recently reporting that the four-door will share its J1 platform with the upcoming Porsche Taycan electric saloon.

Audi tech boss Ulrich Widmann told the British publication that the newcomer will “get some genes from Porsche and add a lot of Audi genes”.

The E-Tron GT will be launched in 2020, and it will be previewed by a concept car that’s set to be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November.

While it will have a similar range to the E-Tron SUV, which is known to be around 400km according to claims, the GT sedan’s powertrain would be more focused on performance, Autocar also reports.

This would make sense given all the hype surrounding Tesla’s Model S and its supercar-slaying acceleration figures, but it remains to be seen whether Audi will actually beat Tesla on the dragstrip.

As with the SUV, expect the GT to have electric motors on each axle, offering quattro all-wheel-drive capability.

“The four-door prototype Audi E-Tron GT concept interprets sportiness in a new, progressive way,” says Audi

“With its fascinating design and a purely electric drive, it leads our Audi Sport performance brand confidently into the future.”

Watch this space for more details when the concept car breaks cover next month.
