BMW X4 exposed in concept form

The BMW X6 ruffled a few feathers when it hit the scene back in 2008. Yet as pointless as it seems, we can't help but like it - it's simply packed with attitude.

Now BMW's so-called 'Sports Activity Coupe' niche is taking a step downstream with the new X4.

What you see here is officially a concept car, but given how production-ready it looks, we can't imagine much changing in its transition into a production model.

With its big grille, 21-inch two-tone alloy wheels and sloping roof line, the X4 emulates the powerful stance of its bigger X6 brother.

It aims to bring some coupé-like visual excitement into the compact crossover market and will certainly draw its battle lines on Range Rover Evoque turf when it goes on sale in 2014.

Naturally, it'll be based on the X3's platform and will share that model's most powerful turbopetrol engines, including the 180kW 2-litre four-cylinder and 225kW 3-litre six-cylinder, and perhaps the 225kW 3-litre turbodiesel.

We certainly wouldn't be surprised to see an M version, which would come with the next M3's force-fed six.
