Little boys, they say, never grow up - their toys just get more expensive.

And for every little boy who ever played with a brightly-coloured, big-wheeled Hot Wheels toy car and dreamed of driving a real one some day, that dream could be about to come true.

Last year GM and Mattel (the makers of Hot Wheels) built a full-sized Camaro Hot Wheels concept the for SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas - and the punters' reaction must have been very positive indeed because the two companies are about to debut a limited-edition production run at this year's show, which opens tomorrow (30 October).

SPECIAL METALLIC BLUE PAINT

Actually, it's not even a model in its own right; it's a special package, at an eye-watering $6995 (R61 000) over and above the cost of your new Camaro, that you can order with any 2013 Camaro - coupé or convertible, with either the 3.6-litre V6 or 6.2-litre V8.

It includes special metallic blue paint that GM insists will not be available on other models, with red Hot Wheels flame logos inside and out, and special Hot Wheels-style rims.

As Hot Wheels head of design Felix Holst put it, in an interview with Detroit News: “It's the first time a fan can buy a real Hot Wheels car that they can go out and drive around in.”

And of course there will be a Hot Wheels tie-in toy car, several hundred of which will be handed out to lucky punters at the SEMA show, and they'll be in toyshops in time for Christmas.

Oh well, a boy can dream, can't he?
