Detroit Motor Show - The new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has pounced to the top of the score sheets to scoop the 2014 North American Car of the Year title, while its Chevrolet Silverado sibling did the same in the Truck of the Year contest.

This is the first time in history that Chevrolet has won both awards in the same year - the Corvette having previously won in 1998 and the Silverado in 2007.

The North American Car and Truck/utility of the year awards are judged by a panel of 49 motoring journalists from the region and there was some stiff competition this year.

The Corvette had to contend with finalists in the form of the Cadillac CTS and Mazda3, while the Silverado fended off the Jeep Cherokee and Acura MDX.

"Chevrolet is in the midst of the most aggressive product transformation in the brand's more than 100-year history," said an elated GM senior vice president, Alan Batey.

"The Corvette and Silverado truly embody the passion, commitment and focus that is driving us to deliver the most expressive designs, innovative technologies and engaging performance in every vehicle that wears the bowtie."

Revealed a year ago, the new Corvette Stingray is sling-shot into action by a new LT1 V8 engine with up to 343kW and 630Nm on offer, while a new seven-speed manual gearbox with Active Rev Match technology pushes this urge through the back wheels.
