Chevrolet, already a strong player in the Brazilian small car market, is hoping to pull a coup with its all-new Onix hatchback.

Revealed at the Sao Paulo motor show on Monday, the compact five-door is based on Chevrolet Brazil's small car architecture but slots below the current Agile hatchback, on which SA's Chevrolet Utility is based.

ETIOS BASHER?

The Onix will compete with Hyundai's new HB20, Toyota's Etios as well as established players like the VW Gol.

Although the Onix could make for an interesting alternative to the Toyota Etios, our contact at GMSA says there are no plans to bring the Brazilian hatchback to South Africa, where the Spark and Aveo will continue to hold fort at the bottom of GM's price ladder.

In Brazil, the Onix will be offered with 58kW 1-litre and 73kW 1.4-litre engines that are capable of running on ethanol. The engines are mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

TECHNO SAVVY

LS, LT and LTZ trims will be on offer, with top versions boasting GM's MyLink infotainment system that allows drivers to play their songs and view their photos, videos and smartphone apps on a seven-inch colour LCD screen.

Do you think GMSA should invest in this one?
