Chevrolet is set to enter the performance hatchback market when its new Sonic RS screeches onto local streets during the first quarter of next year, but fans will get to admire it in the flesh as early as next week when the Johannesburg International Motor Show opens its doors to the public on 18 October.

The Sonic RS is not in the same hot hatch league as heavy-hitters like the Ford Fiesta ST and VW Polo GTI, although it's expected to provide a more affordable alternative to those who still seek sporty looks and satisfying performance.

On that note, the RS is powered by a 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine that pushes 103kW at 6300rpm and 200Nm from 2500 revs and which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The RS rides on dark-painted 17-inch alloy wheels and Chevrolet has also tinkered with the suspension to match the car's sportier appeal. It can also be told apart by its RS-specific grille and redesigned rear spoiler and fascia.

Inside, the RS gets a bespoke Jet Black interior theme complete with red-accented leather seats, a new three-spoke steering wheel, aluminium pedals and unique instrument panel graphics.

What's more, Chevrolet's advanced MyLink infotainment system will make its South African debut in this car.
