Volkswagen has announced that its 90kW Golf and Jetta 1.4 TSI Comfortline models can now be ordered with a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

The double-clutch transmission not only ensures smooth gear changes by using the alternate clutch to pre-select the next gear, but VW claims it can cut your fuel bill by as much as 12 percent compared to a manual gearbox and 20 percent compared to a conventional torque converter automatic.

The 1.4-litre engine delivers 90kW and 200Nm between 1500 and 4000rpm and matched to the DSG, VW says it'll sprint from 0-100km/h in 9.5 seconds in the case of the Golf and 9.8 in the Jetta. Combined fuel consumption is listed as 6.0 litres per 100km.

In both cars, the DSG option will set you back an extra R14 500 over the manual models.
