Dearborn, Michigan - In recent months Ford has been creating a series of one-off customs inspired by aviation.

Each will be auctioned to raise funds for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s youth aviation programme.

But this one is the first to make a blip on our radar: it's a very special 2016 Mustang inspired by the Apollo lunar project of the 1960s and '70s.

It's finished in Nasa white with black accents like a Saturn V booster, with a Mad Industries aero kit including carbon-fibre front splitter, rear diffuser and LED underbody lighting that's supposed to symbolised re-entry.

COLLECTOR’S PIECE

But the really special stuff is inside, starting with a special Nasa-styled instrument cluster, sports gauges and custom leather seats. And where the rear seats used to be there's a bulkhead emblazoned with an embroidered montage of all the Apollo mission patches.

Now that alone is enough to make this car a collector's piece.

And it has the go to match the show, with a supercharged five-litre Coyote V8 by Ford Performance delivering 460kW and 540Nm, an X-pipe exhaust system with side and rear tailpipes, sports suspension and six-pot Brembo brakes inside 21-inch Forgiato rims.
