New Delhi - Hyundai has staged the global launch of its new Creta compact SUV in India, ahead of its global rollout.

Hyundai South Africa has confirmed that it will be heading our way, but could not give any timing at this stage.

Set to go head-to-head with compact crossovers such as the Ford EcoSport and Renault Captur, it promises to be a sophisticated and refined entrant and is built around Hyundai’s light-yet-robust 'Hive Structure'.

Top models are rather nicely kitted with items like keyless push-button start, touch-screen audio system with reverse camera, automatic climate control and 17-inch 'Diamond Cut' alloy wheels.

On the engine front the sole petrol option is a normally aspirated 1.6-litre unit credited with 90kW and 151Nm, and Hyundai is also offering two diesels in India. The smaller of the two, the 1.4 CRDi, is good for 66kW and 220Nm, while the 1.6 CRDi is rated at 94kW/260Nm.

Depending on the engine selected, a choice of six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes is selected. Drive is to the front wheels. What? You were expecting to conquer the Amazon in this cute crossover?

The local pricing and line-up will be revealed closer to launch date. Just get here fast, before the segment gets too crowded.
