The Mahindra Xylo, a basic rear-wheel-driven MPV that reminds us of the Toyota Condor in concept, has spawned a bakkie derivative. Called the Genio, it's due to reach South Africa within three months, after first making an appearance at the Johannesburg International Motor Show next month.
Both single-cab and double-cab versions will be on offer, with the former offering a highly respectable payload of 1250kg and the latter boasting one of the largest tubs in its category, although an exact payload is not disclosed.
The Genio is motivated by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine that puts out 89kW at 4000rpm and 290Nm between 1800 and 2800rpm. In addition to the standard rear-wheel drive format, four-wheel drive versions will also be available.
Inside you'll find what Mahindra describes as the most spacious cabin in its class and other novelties include fold-away 'flight trays', on-board computer, CD/MP3/USB audio system linked to steering wheel controls and cruise control.
ABS braking will be standard on the Genio, while it appears that driver and passenger-side airbags will be an added-cost option.
The local distributor could not comment on pricing as yet, but given the relative cheapness of the Xylo (R169 900), expect the Genio to fall well within the budget bakkie realm.
