Here's a new twist on what is rapidly becoming known as JDM (Japanese domestic market) - cars from Japanese manufacturers that are only officially available in their home country, and thus much prized elsewhere.

The few that do reach South Africa are simply referred to as 'imported' while among American riders, Japan-only motorcycles are known as unobtainium - a term which is pretty well self-explanatory.

These three Japan-only models, on the other hand, will be made in Germany by AMG, in very, very limited numbers, for a few very lucky yen billionaires.

A SPECIAL EDITION OF JUST 20 UNITS

Only five examples will be made of the SLS AMG Matt Edition matte black roadster, with black soft top and glossy red accents on the grille, rims, gill trim and fuel-filler cap.

The black-and-red theme continues inside with two-tone leather trim, sports steering wheel and special floor-mats. Deliveries will begin in September at ¥30 million (R3.125 million) each.

For those who like their matte a little lighter, there will also be five Cashmere White roadsters and 10 Cashmere White coupés, each with twinkly black chrome on the grille and fuel-cap and matte-black rims, all-leather trim in black and cream, the aforementioned AMG sports steering wheel and cream-and-black floor-mats.

The Roadster will sell for the same price as its darker siblings, while the coupés will go for ¥29 million (R3.025 million) each.
