We're on record as stating that the 2.5-tonne, 430kW, 5.5-litre Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is a lunatic limo; it's certainly nobody's idea of a sports car.

But it's also true that the white-coat warriors at Affalterbach have a habit of making crazy ideas work - and that they are firm believers in the old saying, "If lots is good, more is better and too much is just about right".

ALL-NEW S65 AMG

And that means the S63 will be joined in the final quarter of this year (expect to see a world premiere at the Los Angeles motor show) by an all-new all-wheel drive S65 AMG, with its six-litre, biturbo V12 tweaked to deliver at least 10 percent more than the previous model's 458kW and 1000Nm.

Given the size and heft of this Stuttgart Sledgehammer, you or I would try it out on the longest, widest airport runway we could find. AMG tested it around the tortuous Nurburgring. See for yourself.
