MG previews bold new compact SUV
The British marque renowned for compact sports cars and the odd hot hatch will soon be forging into crossover territory.
MG's Chinese owner, SAIC, has released these official sketches of the MG CS concept car, which previews a production model.
Set to be unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show on 20 April, the CS was penned by a design team led by global design director Anthony Williams-Kenny.
MG expects the production vehicle to expand the global reach of the MG brand, while "creating a sensation among young, fashion conscious people."
Design highlights include headlights with a 'shard' structure, which refract light in different colours and shape from the side, while the vehicle's blacked out A-pillar and bold wheel arches lend it a purposeful look.
Taking the battle to compact crossovers like the Nissan Juke and Kia Soul, the MG CS will likely be based on the MG5 hatchback's platform.
That car is powered by a 1.5-litre 16-valve petrol engine that's good for 80kW, but there's also a turbocharged version of this engine in the pipeline and that would surely be a logical bet for the GS.
The crossover will join a growing range of MG models, which currently comprises MG3, MG5 and MG6 models - the latter being the only one that's currently sold in South Africa.
