Johannesburg - The ongoing Takata airbag saga has impacted on South African car-owners again, as Mitsubishi recalls 2354 Lancer 1.6 and Lance Evo models sold here between 2003 and 2007 for safety inspections and replacement of airbags.

Mitsubishi SA told IOL Motoring the original list from its parent company comprised 2854 VIN numbers of cars supplied to South Africa. Of those the South African motor industry database Damisa confirmed that all but 500 were still registered.

CHECK YOUR VIN

The company is busy contacting the owners of the cars to arrange the service inspections, during which the airbags will be replaced free of charge. Each procedure takes about an hour, and the programme will begin as soon as the replacement parts have been distributed to Mitsubishi dealers countrywide.

If you have a Mitsubishi Lancer that was first registered in South Africa between 2003 and 2007 - even if you're not the original owner - you can check whether your car is affected by the recall using the VIN-checker on the Mitsubishi SA website .
