GWM has added two new derivatives to its Steed 2.2 Workhorse one-tonner line-up, the Single Cab Lux and Double Cab Lux.

As their names suggest, they have the same mechanical underpinnings as the (very) basic entry-level model - launched in South Africa in 2010 - but with a few more “comfort” features.

They're motivated by the same 2.2-litre, multiport fuel-injected petrol engines - rated at 78kW at 4600rpm and 190Nm at 2400rpm - driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, and each comes with a 70-litre fuel tank.

While the base Workhorse has power steering as its one and only “luxury” feature, the Lux models come with remote central locking, aircon, CD/MP3 player, individual bucket seats, front foglights, and colour-coded front bumpers.

The Double Cab Lux even has power windows front and rear.

GWM SA chairman Tony Pinfold said: “With the launch of Steed 3 Series GWM is again delivering on its promise to provide South Africans with affordable vehicles that effortlessly meet the demands of their daily activities.”

HOW AFFORDABLE?

Single Cab Workhorse - R109 990

Single Cab Lux - R122 990

Double Cab Lux - R139 990

That includes VAT, a three-year or 100 000km warranty ands two years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Pinfold added: “Whether a customer is looking for the gloves-off, hard-working ability of the Workhorse, the extra features in the Single Cab Lux that make the daily grind more enjoyable or the versatility of the Double Cab, we have a Steed for everyone.”
