It could only happen in the Big Apple - the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency has been named as 2012 World Green Car at the New York auto show.

The big Merc was chosen from an initial entry list of 23 new vehicles from all over the world.

This is actually the second time that a Mercedes-Benz has won World Green Car honours; the E320 BlueTEC technology was the 2007 winner.

The maker claims that the S250 is the world's most economical luxury sedan, with an output of 150kW on only 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres, while warming the globe at a rate of 149 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
