Detroit Motor Show - Following hot on the heels of the new Subaru WRX breaking cover late last year, Subaru has appeased its blue-blooded fans by revealing the STI version.

The latest incarnation of the iconic sedan honours its heritage right down to 18-inch wheels that match the gold in your smile and a boot spoiler that you can iron your clothes on.

Also setting it apart on the mean streets is a bonnet air scoop and bespoke bumpers, headlights and fenders.

What counts the most, though, is that 2.5-litre flat-four turbopetrol engine beneath that scoop, which pushes 227kW and 393Nm at 4000rpm. No performance numbers yet, sadly.

Linking the Boxer motor to Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is a six-speed manual gearbox with a shorter throw and sportier shift feel.

AGILITY AND COMFORT

The AWD system employs the latest vehicle dynamics control and Active Torque Vectoring, while the springs and shocks have been "meticulously retuned" to procure a more comfortable ride while maintaining the STI's legendary road holding capabilities.

The proof, they say, lies in the testing that took place around the globe, including extensive testing at the Nürburgring in Germany.

Subaru also promises a more direct steering feel and improved responsiveness through the more rigid steering box for the electronic power steering system.

While previous STI models seemed to be exclusively focused on performance and handling, the new one promises a more premium experience with its larger interior that also has a classier feel thanks to the use of soft-touch materials in key areas and various carbon and metal inlays.

The new STI is set hit South African streets in June this year, albeit in limited numbers.
