Suzuki slashes prices of its Alto

Being a bit pricey for what it offered, the Suzuki Alto never really caught on with entry level buyers.

Now hoping to turn that tide, Suzuki has launched a repositioned range that brings the starting price down from R106 900 to R97 800.

A new GA model replaces the previous GL, and it still packs the basic comfort and safety features like air conditioning, power steering and dual front airbags.

Compared to the GL, the GA loses the plastic wheel covers and front electric windows while the interior gets new trim colours and a cubby hole.

For those after more than just the bare basics, the GLX model replaces the previous GLS, and gets a far wider array of standard amenities including front electric windows, four-speaker CD sound system, remote central locking, 14-inch alloy wheels and ABS brakes.

The top model also enjoys a price reduction, from R121 900 to R112 900. Included in the price of both models is a three-year/45 000km service plan and buyers are also protected by a three-year/100 000km warranty.

As before, all models are motivated by a 1-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that's good for 50kW at 5000rpm and 87Nm at 4500rpm. Suzuki claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.7 l/100km and a top speed of 145km/h.
