The original Mk1 Volkswagen Golf has a special place in the hearts of South African petrolheads.
It remained in production here as the Citi Golf, in the world's most successful run-out programme ever, for more than two decades after it had been phased out everywhere else, and became a favourite starting point for super-modified dragsters and hot street cars - but none of them as hot as this one.
HAND-GRENADE ON WHEELS
The car in the video was built by Boba Motoring of Paderborn in Germany on an original late-seventies two-door shell, with a two-litre, 16-valve engine fed by a Garrett GTX3582R turbocharger, that's been tweaked to produce a seriously funky 541kW - and it's still front-wheel drive!
A substantial roll-cage does its best to stop the vintage shell from tying itself in knots when the driver puts foot, but we suspect that there are still problems getting this hand-grenade on wheels off the start line.
Boba won't quote a 0-10km/h time, you see, although they do claim that it will accelerate from 100-200km/h in five seconds flat - almost a full second faster than a Bugatti Veyron.
