Johannesburg - The Traffic Management and Corporation (RTMC) has urged the public to report fraud and corruption at vehicle testing stations.

This is after Gauteng members of the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (Ntacu) arrested a private vehicle examiner and the owner of a vehicle licensing company in Joburg for issuing a fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificate on Monday.

According to RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane, it is alleged the two colluded to have a roadworthy certificate issued for a vehicle without physically examining it and testing it as required. He said Ntacu launched an investigation following a complaint that a private examiner at Motorcity vehicle testing station in Langlaagte had certified a bakkie as roadworthy while it was parked at another place.

Zwane said the examiner had allegedly been approached by the owner of a business trading as Gauteng Registration and Licence Bureau for a roadworthy certificate on the vehicle.

“Gauteng Registration and Licence Bureau operates as a business that assists the public to obtain vehicle registration and licences,” Zwane said.

“It is alleged the vehicle had defects and failed a roadworthiness test at another testing station.”

The pair had appeared in court on Thursday on charges of fraud.

Zwane added that unroadworthy vehicles contributed significantly to collisions, injuries and deaths.
